"Oak trees felled at Ryton Woods"

I have just completed a devastating walk through the ancient and protected Ryton Woods. We counted at least 30 healthy oaks (around 200 years old) that have been recently felled and around 20 more being chainsawed into usable (and saleable?) logs in an area behind the pools. Several healthy stumps have been ridiculously carved into chairs or fun shapes as if these are more attractive than a healthy living tree!

I live in Coventry and for the past year a group of citizens have been working with Councillors and tree officers to try and preserve our city trees. We try to raise awareness to the need to preserve canopy, ancient trees and woodland but I can honestly say that a group of lads on motorbikes roaring through Ryton Woods could not have caused a fraction of the vandalism and destruction I saw today.

I fail to understand why this has been allowed to happen and sincerely hope that future action plans will be carefully reviewed. Since this organisation has that important word TRUST in its title it has responsibility to ensure that these woodlands are preserved for this and future generations. There must be full information given and consultation before radical decisions are made about how this precious woodland should be managed.

I would like to know who is responsible for the decision to fell these oak trees and their reasoning behind such an action. Perhaps some guided walks could be arranged and posted on your website so that visitors have an opportunity to discuss the present action plan with your elected managers. .
